Day 09
Bicicleta
January 9th
On Sunday, during the Biciruta, I rode along Paseo de Montejo, where the colorful architecture seems to whisper stories and memories. The Palacio Cantón, the Twin Houses, the Minaret. The French-style facades lining this avenue are living proof of the economic prosperity Mérida experienced during the 19th century.
I watched families pedaling under the blazing morning sun. Perhaps it’s the music, the people having breakfast at tables set out on the sidewalks by the restaurants, and the craft vendors that make these Sunday mornings so charming.
Exploring Mérida by bicycle has given me a fresh, new perspective on this beautiful means of transportation, which is the most widely used by the people of Yucatán. It has a unique charm. Maybe that’s why it’s known as the most bicycle-loving state in all of Mexico.
